About UsSPEC HistoryIn November 2005, at workshops sponsored by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) with presentations by the Paramedic Association of Canada (PAC), there was overwhelming support for the creation of a body to advance the interests of Canadian paramedic, emergency medical service (EMS) and out-of-hospital educators.
Then, in conjunction with PAC’s Annual General Meeting in July 2006 in Vernon, B.C., workshops were again held for educators, resulting in adoption of our name and the creation of a working group to carry out our formation. Shortly prior to these sessions, educator meetings were also held in Kelowna at the Okanagan Campus of the Justice Institute of BC. Here, the goal was not only to prepare for the upcoming Vernon Workshops, but also to work on the educators’ input into the NOCP revision process. This input has subsequently been submitted to PAC for consideration. In February 2007, and after countless teleconferences, the working group met for the first time face-to-face in Toronto, leading to ratification of SPEC’s by-laws. Regular teleconferences continued afterwards and the Working Group again convened face-to-face the following June, this time in Calgary. These last sessions saw final approval of SPEC’s Membership Fee Schedule, appointment of an interim Board of Directors, consensus for SPEC to seek status as a CMA sponsor, and approval of SPEC’s Commercial Support policy.
Finally, in August 2007, word was received that SPEC had officially been registered and legitimized by the Alberta Corporate Registry. The Working Group was subsequently dissolved as its mandate had been fulfilled.
SPEC now looks forward to serving as a voice and resource for Canadian prehospital educators and working with key stakeholders to enhance the delivery of prehospital training.
